In this chapter we begin to learn more about Dill's background. He doesn't have much of a family life and because of this he admires Scouts family. To achieve a family like hers he believes he must marry her. His parents are divorced and he has a new father. Therefore, his mother and new father did not let him come to Maycomb County because they wanted him to bond with his new dad. This upsets Scout because she needs him to keep her company whilst Jem goes through his difficult time. However Dill's parents do not want to be bothered by him and so they buy him lots of possesions to keep him occupied.
